What is self-care?

Self-care is the art of taking care of one’s self in a healthy way. It may take different forms such as brushing the teeth, doing some exercise or taking medicine when feeling unwell. This act is at times placed on a scale with health care providers as an opposing end to self-care. The truth is that, self-care is any basic personal regulatory function under the individual’s deliberate and self initiated control. You may need to consider several things such as taking various forms of exercises, making changes to your diet particularly if you have long-term health condition. Self-care also implies staying active by taking initiatives that are self building such as going on vacation, seeing friends or even gardening. It is an important aspect that involves living a healthy lifestyle.

Self-care is critical, it basically involves evaluation of what you can do as opposed to what you can’t do. In philosophy, the act can be interpreted as the care and nurturing of self in a broad sense with focus on the soul and self familiarization.
The activities of self-care may include;

  • Taking care of personal hygiene
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking
  • Physical exercise and general fitness
  • Pain management
  • Stress management
  • Pursuing alternative medications such as home remedies and homeopathy
  • Personal development and self-help

Self care is a primary and integral part to health management. It is a personal initiative and a cultural action that aides in promoting self benefiting goals.
